International applicants are exempt from the English proficiency requirement if they were enrolled for at least one academic year in a degree-seeking program at a recognized/regionally accredited university or college in the United States or are from one of these countries.
*New TOEFL Scoring and Minimums effective for Spring 2027 Applicants
In January 2026, TOEFL introduced an updated scoring system — ranging from 1 to 6 in 0.5 increments — to align with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). In response to this change, our Graduate Council voted on May 21, 2026 to establish updated minimum international admission criteria for the TOEFL assessment.
Effective with admission applications for Spring 2027 onward, the new TOEFL score minimums are:
- Overall score of 4.5.
- Subscore minimums of 4.0 in all subsections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing).
Please note that the inclusion of minimum subscores is a change from UF’s previous TOEFL score requirements.
