March 21, 2025

Smart Cities, Attractions, and Theme Parks is a course focusing on the integration of AI, data science, and immersive technologies in the tourism and hospitality industry. The tourism and hospitality industry is undergoing a technological revolution, from AI-powered customer service to predictive data analytics. The University of Florida’s online Master’s in Tourism and Hospitality Management program now offers students a graduate certificate in Artificial Intelligence (AI) with three specialized courses to master this critical technology and stand out in the job market. Students can graduate with two valuable credentials - a master’s degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management and a graduate certificate in AI and Data Analytics in Tourism, Hospitality, and Event Management.

“We’re thrilled to introduce three new courses to our online M.S. program, culminating in an innovative graduate certificate,” said Nico Rose, Assistant Provost and Program Instructor. “This cutting-edge certificate, which can be completed as part of the M.S. program, equips students with specialized expertise in AI-driven trends, data analytics, machine learning, and emerging technologies — preparing them to lead in an increasingly tech-driven industry.”

The online graduate certificate is available exclusively to students enrolled in the online Master’s in Tourism and Hospitality Management program. Students can either complete the three courses required for the certificate or take one or two. Online graduate students will gain valuable insights into how these technologies are used across theme parks, resorts, hotels, smart cities, and cruise lines, enhancing their competitiveness as they apply for jobs and promotions.

"AI is not just a trend — it’s the future of the tourism and hospitality industry,” said Rachel J.C. Fu, Ph.D., Chair of the Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management Department at UF. “With the rise of intelligent customer service bots, personalized travel recommendations, and data-driven operational strategies, professionals who understand AI can dramatically improve guest experiences and operational efficiency."

The first of the three-credit courses, Artificial Intelligence Revolutions and Applications in Tourism, Hospitality, and Events, takes students on an exploration of AI and its impact on the tourism and hospitality sectors. This course examines how AI technologies are transforming business operations, enhancing customer service, and improving booking systems. Through case studies, students will learn how real-world AI applications are reshaping these industries.

The second course, Smart Cities, Attractions, and Theme Parks, focuses on integrating AI, data science, and immersive technologies within the context of tourist attractions, theme parks, and entire smart cities. Students will discover how these technologies improve operational efficiency while promoting sustainable and guest-centered tourism experiences. The course also addresses the ethical implications and operational challenges associated with AI tools.

The third course, Data Mining with Social Data, provides students with critical skills to analyze and translate massive amounts of data. Students will learn how to apply new approaches to data storage and analysis to leverage data produced by networks of traditional sensors, social networks, and novel data acquisition systems.

A graduate certificate in AI and Data Analytics in Tourism, Hospitality, and Event Management prepares students for technological advancements in the industry.Graduate students can apply this knowledge, along with other skills gained in UF’s online Tourism and Hospitality Management program, to advance their careers and enhance their competitive edge in the job market. Almost three-quarters of travel leaders are planning to use generative AI tools for cost savings and efficiency, according to a recent survey. However, tourism leaders fear workers might not be ready to keep up with AI opportunities – two-thirds of executives who participated in the survey cited workforce readiness and lack of training as obstacles.

“Professionals who understand AI and its applications will be better equipped to drive innovation, improve service delivery, and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market,” Rose said. “Additionally, developing key literacy skills regarding these technologies is key to ensuring intentional, strategic, and responsible use."

The tourism and hospitality industry continues to evolve alongside AI. By studying AI and data analytics, students will be prepared to drive the change they want to see in the industry.

“Learning AI allows industry leaders to stay ahead of competitors, anticipate guest needs, and create more sustainable and innovative solutions,” Fu said. “By mastering AI, you position yourself at the forefront of technological advancements that will define the next generation of tourism and hospitality management.”
